Peek Inside this Boho-Inspired Home in Austin, TexasStephen Andears is settling into his new Empire home at Goodnight Ranch quite nicely. Having recently moved into one of Austin’s most-coveted communities with his husband who is also named Stephen and two cats, Jojo and Lele, the first time homebuyer gave us a look inside his mid-century and boho-inspired space and shares his tips for designing a new home.
Tell us a bit about you and your family.
“My husband and I got married a few months ago. We have two cats, one black American shorthair named Jojo and one tabby named Lele. Our family is new, but we intend on growing it in the future. For now, our cats and collection of plants keep us busy!”
When did you move into your Empire home?
“We moved into our home in early July 2020. This is our first house and we couldn’t wait to design it and make it our own.”
What drew you to this specific home design?
“My husband and I both immediately gravitated towards the design of our current home over other floor plans. Architecturally, we both love the craftsman bungalow style with the large inviting porch and classic facade. We also love that there’s a ton of natural light and plenty of windows for the plants and cats.”
What makes Goodnight Ranch a great place to live, and what are some of your favorite amenities?
“We were drawn to the Goodnight Ranch neighborhood because it was developed around the ‘live, work, play where you live’ motto. We love that there are large front porches instead of front-facing garages, and parks everywhere. Once the community is fully built, we will also have access to a town center with offices, shopping, restaurants, and other amenities to enjoy alongside our neighbors. My favorite amenity right now is the park system; we have a three-mile hike and bike trail that connects to a larger metro park within the city of Austin. We love being able to get a little slice of nature just steps from our front door.”
How would you describe the design style of your home?
“We wanted our home to be a mix of contemporary mid-century modern and boho. My husband and I love the simple yet warm nature of the design styles. The aesthetic makes our home feel inviting and comfortable for ourselves and our guests.”
What room is the heart of your Empire home and why?
“The living room is the heart of our home. We have a large free-flowing open space that connects the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. Whether we’re relaxing at home or entertaining, we’re able to talk to each other and our guests no matter where we are in the heart of our home.”
What’s one tip you would give to someone designing their new home?
“Have a plan! My husband and I discussed our vision before we went into the building process and knew for the most part exactly what we wanted. If we hadn’t had this discussion ahead of time, our design appointment would’ve been much more overwhelming. Designing your home should be fun and exciting, so knowing what you want really helps when it comes time to meet with your decor consultant.
